Work-Life balance

The culture which often forced people to make choices between their homes and families or having a rewarding career is being challenged.

The Council has a number of schemes designed to introduce flexibility into working patterns thereby opening up the world of work to those who have caring responsibilities.

If you are appointed, you will receive the Council's Employee Handbook, which provides more detailed information on these schemes.

The information provided here summarises many of the schemes available to Council employees.

  • Job Share
  • Holiday
  • Sick Pay
  • Maternity Support Leave / Paternity Leave
  • Special Leave
  • Maternity
  • Parental Leave
  • Adoption Leave

    Job Share

Job sharing is where two people divide the duties and responsibilities of one full-time post. The salary and conditions of service of the post are divided between the job shareholders according to the hours they work. Each job sharer is given an individual contract of employment. All posts within the Council are open to job share with a few exceptions.

    Holiday

Holiday entitlement for individual employees vary to some extent, depending on length of service, grade and which body negotiates the basic terms and conditions.

All full time employees are entitled to a minimum of twenty three days holiday in a full year. This increases to twenty seven days after five years service.

Generally, employees are entitled to the eight National Bank and Public Holidays although, in some sections, special arrangements apply due to the nature of the work and local agreements.

    Sick Pay

If you are ill and unable to work you will generally be entitled to paid sickness absence, unless you have had a great deal of sickness absence already or the illness continues for a long time. Your exact entitlement will vary according to length of service and your specific conditions of employment.

Maternity Support Leave / Paternity Leave

There is statutory right to two weeks paternity leave paid at the same rate of pay as Statutory Maternity Pay, however the council allows the first week to be paid at full pay under Maternity Support Arrangements.

    Special Leave

Up to six days special leave may be granted by a senior manager to cover unforeseen circumstances such as bereavement, special caring responsibilities, etc. Details of the provisions within the scheme can be provided on request.

    Maternity

From April 2003 revised maternity leave and pay arrangements have applied. All employees are entitled to Ordinary Maternity leave of 26 weeks paid in accordance with statute. For employees who have one year of continuous Local Government service (and confirm the intention to return to work), the council will pay 12 weeks at half pay plus SMP following the first 6 weeks being paid at 9/10ths of a weeks pay, in accordance with statute.

    Parental Leave

Unpaid leave for parents is allowed, up to a maximum of 13 weeks before the childs 5th birthday.

    Adoption Leave

Adoption Leave is granted to enable an employee to adopt a child and help settle the child into the family. Further details on adoption leave will be available from your Manager or Resource Group/Personnel Section.
