Different Interview Techniques

Listed below are some common interview practices.  If possible (for example if you are using a recruitment agent) we recommend you try to ascertain the style of the interviewer you are meeting before you attend the interview as this will give you a head start.

Biographical Interview - My Southampton Jobs

A biographical interview is the most common type of interview and usually involves meeting a line manager and discussing one’s career history and experience.  Biographical interviews can be quite informal and can also involve close scrutiny of your CV.

Competency Based Interview - My Southampton Jobs

Competency based interviews are employed to try to ascertain skills and competencies which you possess which are relevant to the job in question. For example if the job requires good teamwork, good communication skills, attention to detail or strong customer relations etc then you may find that the style of interview employed will be competency based. There is a list of competencies at the bottom of this page.

Behavioural Interview – My Southampton Jobs

On a similar vein to competency based interviews, behavioural interviews assess competencies, but base this primarily on examples from past performance.  For example, if the interviewer wants to assess your leadership qualities he/she may ask you something along the lines of “give me an example of where your leadership qualities came to the fore to resolve a problem”

Hypothetical Interview – My Southampton Jobs

Hypothetical interviews involve asking hypothetical questions and assessing your response to gauge initiative, competencies and how you would cope in a particular situation. For example, the interviewer may ask you something along the lines of “what would you do if your manager called in sick on the morning he was due to deliver a presentation to an extremely important client?”

Case Study – My Southampton Jobs

Sometimes potential candidates are assessed on case studies. This is something to look out for when you are preparing for an interview.  If you check out the employer’s website and notice the use of case studies then you should examine any examples in detail, as these may come up during interview. Sometimes candidates are told about case studies in advance, but this is not always the case. Case studies can be written, involve presentations or be based purely on interview.
