Job Description
The Centre for Contemporary China (CCC) at the University of Southampton is seeking to appoint an academic with expertise and a research interest in China’s economy, financial systems or management in China. The appointment will be made at either the Lecturer or Reader level depending upon the research profile and experience of the successful candidate. A good track record in published research and experience of teaching at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels is required. The post holder will be expected to support the development of the Centre’s research agenda, develop their own research programme, supervise doctoral students and contribute to the MSc in International Comparative Studies and other programmes.
The CCC plans to expand its portfolio of China related courses over the forthcoming period and the post-holder will be expected to play a key role in such developments. Thus experience in curriculum development is essential in this post.
For appointment at the Reader level the candidate must have a well-established national and international research reputation in one of the fields required by the post. The Reader would be expected to take overall responsibility for research activities and curriculum development initiatives within the CCC.
The Centre for Contemporary China was set up in 2004 to develop the University's academic links with China. Since then, the Centre has developed strategic partnerships including Peking University, Xiamen University, Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and Ocean University of China, Qingdao (Southampton's sister city). The Centre was also responsible for managing the Innovation China UK (ICUK) knowledge and technology transfer initiative, and is host to a newly established Confucius Institute in conjunction with Xiamen University.
The Centre aims to
- To co-ordinate and encourage research into contemporary China.
- To identify and support initiatives and areas of co-operation with the highest ranked Universities and institutions in China.
- To provide courses to develop knowledge of contemporary China
- To provide courses to develop knowledge of UK for Chinese customers.
- To provide a research and consultancy service to industry and others on contemporary China.
The MSc in International Comparative Studies was established in 2008 and is aimed at those who want to understand the implications of China as an economic superpower on the world stage and the impact of the recent changes China has experienced both for itself, its trading partners and globally. The MSc explores China's economic, social, cultural and political development in recent decades and in today's world. The programme puts China's evolution in a global context and compares its experiences with those of the UK, USA, India, European and other East Asian countries.
