Job Description
Senior Systems Specialist in Technical Innovation and Developments
iSolutions, one of the largest departments within the University of Southampton’s Professional Services Group, provides computing facilities, data communications and telephony services to support all University activities. This includes Learning and Teaching, Research and University Administration and supports a diverse user community of over 35,000 University staff and students.
iSolutions is now looking to recruit a talented Senior Systems Specialist.
The post is part of the department’s Technical Innovation & Developments team and will be based mainly in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment and will work closely with senior members of the Faculty to design, develop and support their specialist systems.
The Technical Innovation & Development steam consists of over 20 technical professionals responsible for the direct support of the University’s research agenda and the generation of innovative ICT solutions to meet the needs of academic colleagues. Team members work as part of a consolidated ICT delivery department (iSolutions) and are either based directly in a central iSolutions office or directly in faculties where they can respond to local needs. Team members cover skills from hardware specification and procurement, desktop systems, research and academic application support, servers, storage, networks and application programming, across a wide range of technologies and vendors.
As a Senior Systems Specialist you will be responsible for capturing business requirements, and proposing, developing and supporting appropriate ICT solutions to these requirements in cooperation with other members of the team and the wider department, and with academic colleagues within faculties. At all times you will seek to put in place solutions that meet the local need, but that have wider applicability for the benefit of the University as a whole, and which may ultimately be handed over to an operational team for support.
You will be qualified to degree level or equivalent, or have extensive technical experience, and will be able to provide demonstrable technical knowledge and experience in a range of Windows systems and Microsoft technologies, ideally with additional capability in Linux systems, network technologies, and web application programming.
Experience of acting as technical lead/architect on ICT projects, from requirements capture through to solution design and implementation is essential.
You will have a passion for technology and an aptitude to maintain and improve system performance. Working closely with Faculty colleagues will call for excellent communication skills. You will be working in a distributed team and strong team working is therefore essential, as is the ability to build cross-discipline relationships to ensure that iSolutions delivers on the Faculty IT requirements.
We offer excellent benefits including generous holidays and pension scheme, and the opportunity to develop your career in a professional, friendly and pleasant working environment.
