Job Description
This post is being advertised as part of the iCOAST (Integrated COASTal sediment systems) Project, a multi-disciplinary and multi-partner NERC-funded project led by the University of Southampton. It will be undertaking research into new methods to characterise and forecast long term coastal geomorphic system evolution to support erosion and flood risk analysis in partnership with the Environment Agency.
As a Research Fellow on the project, the applicant will be responsible for helping to develop the conceptualisation of the coastal system as interconnected landforms which exhibit mutual adjustment in response to a variety of drivers and the influence of sediment transport and hydrodynamic processes. This will involve the use of coastal system mapping and the development, application and validation of reduced complexity models to represent individual coastal morphological elements as a module within an integrated analysis of interacting coastal geomorphic systems. The post holder will also be expected to prepare guidance materials for the use of the developed iCOAST approach and regularly disseminate findings by taking the lead in preparing publication materials for referred journals, presenting results at conferences, participating in workshops or exhibiting work at other appropriate events, and providing material for the project web site.
The applicant should have PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in coastal engineering, coastal geomorphology or related area. Experience of coastal modelling, programming using software such as MATLAB and Geographic Information Systems, especially ArcGIS, is desirable.
The post will be responsible to the Project Leader, Professor Robert Nicholls, and will be based at the Highfield Campus of Southampton University.
Please apply on-line through the University of Southampton website www.jobs.soton.ac.uk or call 023 8059 2750. The closing date for applications is 19 February 2012. Please quote reference number 085212AT in all correspondence.
