Job Description

The University of Southampton is one of the top 15 research universities in the UK.  To build on our education and research success to date, the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences is inviting applications for four positions as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/biosci).

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Molecular/Cellular Biology (3 positions) - Job Reference Number: 086512BJ

We are seeking three Molecular/Cellular Biologists and one Neuroscientist with established track records of internationally competitive research who will hold full-time academic positions as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Biological Sciences. The appointees will complement and strengthen our existing research expertise and will be involved in undergraduate teaching on our Biological Sciences programmes.

The successful applicants will join the Centre for Biological Sciences which is at the hub of interdisciplinary initiatives through its engagement with the Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS). The Molecular/Cellular Biologists will have opportunities to pursue collaborative research particularly with Medicine, Chemistry and Engineering. The IfLS also links fundamental aspects of Neuroscience with Clinical Medicine through the Southampton Neuroscience Group (SoNG) (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/song), enabling collaborative research on biomedical themes.

 Applicants for these posts should demonstrate:

  • evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications and invited lectures;
  • ability to obtain peer-reviewed funding in their research area.  For Senior Lecturers, an established track record of sustained funding would be expected.
  • enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching, thereby contributing to the Biomedical Sciences and Biology programmes;
  • for Senior Lecturer candidates, capability for development of novel Masters programmes (MSc, MRes, 4-yr undergraduate);

Although candidates across the broad spectrum of biomolecular and cellular sciences are encouraged to apply, preference may be given to candidates who would reinforce or complement existing strengths: molecular organisation of proteins and nucleic acids; gene expression; cell growth and cell division; membrane proteins and cellular function; molecular genetics and epigenetics.

The Neuroscientist would be expected to reinforce or complement the strengths of the cross-faculty Southampton Neuroscience Group.

Approaches integrating levels of organisation would also be welcomed for all four positions, including Systems Biology.

Applications from candidates with experience or skills in proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, imaging and bioinformatics are encouraged.

Potential applicants who wish to discuss the Cellular & Molecular Biology posts are welcome to contact Professor Keith Fox (krf1@soton.ac.uk) and for the Neuroscience post, Professor Lindy Holden-Dye (lmhd@soton.ac.uk).

The closing date for these posts is 23rd February 2012. Please apply online through www.jobs.soton.ac.uk or alternatively telephone 023 8059 2750 for an application form.
